Mrs. Godfroy's first grade class recently finished up their nonfiction writing unit and celebrated by getting to share their writing pieces with their 4K friends! The room was set up like a museum and our #WatertownWay 4K students could stop by the writing topics that they were most interested in hearing about. It was an awesome experience that provided the opportunity for Mrs. Godfroy's first graders to be great role models and teachers to our youngest learners. Way to go, Schurz Tigers!

Today Mrs. Wolf’s class had the privilege to have Mayor McFarland join them! These Schurz Tigers were tasked to write persuasive speeches to help change the world around us. The class chose to focus on our community of Watertown and the topic of littering. Using their writing unit skills, they began their research of Watertown, the Rock River, littering, our mayor and did a student class survey that identified that littering occurs most often when individuals toss items outside of their car windows. Mrs. Wolf's class all wrote Mayor McFarland letters for their final persuasive essay to persuade the mayor to help create awareness around littering in our community. Mayor McFarland surprised them today with a special visit, fliers that she made for Schurz School to participate in a fun clean-up bingo activity and to encourage our community to help clean up the Rock River this year. Check out Mayor McFarland's Weekly Roundup tomorrow as she reports out on her visit with Mrs. Wolf's class! 👇 https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=258059501877843 Thank you, Mayor McFarland!

Do you know any children from ages birth through age 5 who live in the Watertown Unified School District? Through generous support of the Greater Watertown Community Health Foundation, these children can be signed up for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Children will receive a free, high quality book each month, mailed directly to their home! This exciting program promotes early childhood literacy and fosters parent/caregiver-child interaction, which helps children learn the skills they will need for kindergarten, including larger vocabularies and healthy social and emotional development. For more information and to enroll, follow this link: https://talkreadplaywi.com/imagination-library/

Students from Eric Kleine's Spanish Texts and Composition class at Watertown High School traveled to Schurz Elementary School on Thursday to read to Gayle Ebert's Dual Language Kindergarten class. The WHS students wrote their own children's stories as a final project for their Children's Literacy Unit in which they learned about the importance of reading to young children, the effects reading has on the brain development of a child, elements and structure of children's stories, and a study of the famous book "The Little Prince" (El Principito).
